The Girl with the Glasses

If you want to hear about my torrid love hate relationship with glasses,
please do BUT if you are just here for the coupon codes,
I won't hate you if you just skip my babbling and get to the codes.
Spoiler alert, the coupon codes are at the very bottom.

My mother had glasses my whole life and I knew that she hated them, so naturally, I was devastated when I realized that my eyes were broken.

I was 8 years old, and after weeks of squinting and scooting closer to the chalkboard, television, what have you, I finally told my mom that my eyes were fuzzy and she took me to my first ever eye appointment. I was afraid of the machines, I quietly cried as we looked high and low in that store for cute glasses that fit my tiny face. Plot twist: there were none.

When my new ugly pair of glasses came in, I sat in front of the mirror and stared - very clearly, if i may- at my metal cladded face and cried. I was already nerdy, scrawny and brought a rock collection with me everywhere I went, but for some reason, the glasses were something I just COULD NOT handle. I felt like a nerd to the tenth power.  My mother called my teacher to warn her that I was going through a lot of feelings with this new change and to just try not to mention it or draw any extra attention to me for a few days, like, don't call on me in class or have me give any sort of oral report, etc.

The next day, I slumped in through the front doors and quickly walked to my classroom, staring at my feet, and sat down in my desk and immediately put my head down. I looked at no one and no one could look at me. Maybe I would stay like this all day, I thought, even though I knew that I couldn't, it was nice to dream.

The dream ended when I heard an unfamiliar voice. I raised my head to see a substitute teacher standing in my teacher's place. She was calling on me to answer a question, but she didn't know my name, so she called me the only thing she could think of... "the girl with the glasses." Those words clunked around in my skull. Was everyone staring at me? Everyone was definitely staring at me and laughing too. I answered the question with a quivering voice and put my head back down and quietly cried. I wanted to disappear.

Fast forward to 4 years ago. I had been wearing contacts for over ten years HAPPILY and enjoying the best of both worlds: being able to see AND wanting to be seen. Puberty hit me late and the glow up was real, and I felt the best I had in years, but I was lazy. I slept in my contacts, hardly ever took them out, hardly ever cleaned them. Not my best look for sure, especially the day I woke up and my eye was swollen shut. My lens had fused to my cornea... and I was prescribed NO CONTACTS FOR TWO WEEKS to let my eyes rest and heal.

I was not happy. I went back a week later to get my exam and pick out some frames, and when I say I was a brat that day, I mean, I. was. a. brat. None of the glasses were cute, they all made me look like a goofy moron. It was irrational fit throwing city. Alas, I picked out a tortoise shell pair with cat eye frames and called it a day.

Much to my surprise, these frames fit and flattered my face. They were fun but neurtral so they went with a lot of outfits. I did not hate these glasses, but I did not love them either. I didn't think I would ever love glasses...until I met Alecia.

I met Alecia like I meet everyone these days: online. I believe she followed The Crybaby Club on Instagram and then we began following each other mutually. She reached out and told me about a new eyewear boutique opening up in Germantown and wanted to invite me to come look around and get a free eye exam + glasses. Everyone there was a doll and I was really excited for the chance to get some new, cute, fun glasses. I found this pair of pale pink cat eye frames and my search was over. OR so I thought. Alecia also convinced me to snag a pair of prescription sunglasses that are as extra and amazing as I am. I had never had prescriptions sunglasses but I tell ya...
this was a game changer.

A few weeks later, we found out that Sam needed glasses too,
which I was DEVASTATED about. (am I always devastated? The full story at 10) but he was so excited. He wanted a nightstand for his glasses specifically, and he went through the entire store and found his perfect pair for his perfect face. He now owns 4 pairs. In order of preference: his blue Harry Potter glasses (pictured here), his black Harry Potter glasses, his fun glasses (they are squarish blue frame with yellow) and his mad scientist pair (they are crimson red squarish, with the glass exposed at the top). It was such a huge relief to have him be so excited about a lifetime change. He is such an easy going little buddy.

We are a glasses wearing family basically, and now I have come to love wearing glasses too.
The add to my outfit and can lift my mood. I recently got two new pairs in the mail c/o Zeelool and it was an immediate day lifter.
I am happy to be the girl with the glasses now and I am glad that I got over that.
Glasses are fun and so if anyone you know is struggling with their glasses, send em my way!
